Story Time: Students should find a book or story around the house to read. 

Listen to a Story: Find a cozy spot and listen to an audiobook or a story read aloud online.  Storyline Online 

Sight Words: Create flashcards with basic sight words. Practice reading them aloud. (Dolch Site Words for Kindergarten: all, am, are, at, ate, be, black, brown, but, came, did, do, eat, for, get, good, have, he, into, like, must, new, know, now, on, our, out, please, pretty, ran, ride, saw, say, she, so, soon, that, there, they, this, too, under, want, well, went, what, white, who, will, with, yes)

Drawing and Labeling: Draw a picture and label the parts (e.g., parts of a plant, things in a house).

Counting Objects: Find small objects around the house (buttons, beans, etc.) and practice counting them.

Number Line: Use a piece of paper to create a number line from 1-10 and practice counting forwards and backwards.

Shape Hunt: Find objects around the house that match basic shapes (circle, square, triangle).

Building with Blocks: Use building blocks or any household objects to construct a small structure.

Reading a Story: Read a book or listen to an audio story online. Storyline Online 

Character Description: Describe their favorite character from the story.

Journal Entry: Write a few sentences about what they did that day or about a topic you provide.

Simple Sentences: Practice writing simple sentences using sight words. (Dolch Site Words for First Grade: after, again, an, any, as, ask, by, could, every, fly, from, give, going, had, has, her, him, his, how, just, know, let, live, may, of, old, once, open, over, put, round, some, stop, take, thank, them, then, think, walk, were, when)

Weather Report: Write a short weather report describing the cold weather outside. Add simple drawings to illustrate different weather elements like snowflakes or clouds.

Addition and Subtraction: Use small objects to practice basic addition and subtraction (within 20).

Shape Drawing: Draw different shapes and identify them. Count and label the number of sides and angles.

Simple Science Experiment: Freeze water to observe how it turns to ice, then melt it again.

Nature Observation: Go outside to observe and draw a plant or animal.

Read Aloud: Read a short book or story aloud.

Vocabulary List: Write down new words from the story and look up definitions.

Winter Stories:Listen to Just Snow Already. In the story, the little boy keeps saying that there is nothing going on outside because he doesn’t see any snow. Explain why he is wrong, using at least two details from the illustrations and the text. “The boy is wrong, because in the illustrations I can see...”

Story Writing: Write a short story about their favorite animal or an adventure.

Letter Writing: Write a letter to a friend or family member.

Simple Multiplication: Practice counting in multiples using objects (e.g., count by 2s with pairs of socks).

Pattern Creation: Create patterns using different household items (e.g., colored paper, buttons).

Balloon Rocket: Blow up a balloon and release it without tying it, observing its movements.

Simple Machinery: Find items that can act as simple machines (levers, pulleys) around the house and experiment with their use.

Chapter Summary: Read a chapter from a book and write a summary. Tell us about the characters and what happened in the chapter. 

Reading Comprehension: Read a story and create three questions about the story for another student to answer.

Opinion Piece: Write a short essay about their favorite book or movie and why they like it.

Poem Writing: Write a simple poem about nature or their favorite season.

Multiplication Practice: Draw arrays of snowflakes, snowmen, or snowballs on paper. 

Fraction Identification: Use paper to create different fractions (cut into halves, thirds, etc.).

Paper Airplane: Design and test different paper airplane models for distance and speed.

Shadow Puppets: Use a flashlight and hands to create shadow puppets, experimenting with shapes and storytelling.

Insulation Experiment: Use different materials (e.g., blankets, towels) to insulate an ice cube and see which material keeps it from melting the longest.

Book Report: Read a book and complete a book report covering the main characters, plot, and their thoughts on it.

Book Cover Design: Read a book and create a new and exciting book cover that makes other people want to read it. Be sure to list the author and illustrator. 

Creative Writing: Write a short story from the perspective of an inanimate object (e.g., a shoe).

Guide Creation: Create a guide explaining how to do something they are good at (like a hobby).

Hot Cocoa Recipe: Write a step-by-step recipe for making hot cocoa. If possible, make the cocoa and enjoy it!

Division Practice: Create an array of 50 snowballs on a sheet of paper. Cut them out if you can. How many times can you divide the 50 snowballs into equal groups? Write down as many division and multiplication problems as you can come up with. 

Measurement Activity: Measure items around the house (e.g., length of a table, height of a book) and record the data.

Snowflake Art: Watch this video on snow. Pause the video on the pictures of snowflakes and draw what you observe. Write two interesting facts that you heard or observed from the video. 

Chapter Summary: Read a short story or a chapter from a book and write a summary. Tell us about the characters and what happened in the chapter.

Diary Entry: Write a diary entry from the perspective of a historical figure.

Decimal Conversations: Practice converting fractions to decimals and vice versa in your head. Start with simple fractions like 1/2, 1/4, 3/4, and see if you can express them as decimals (0.5, 0.25, 0.75). Reverse the process and convert the decimals back to fractions. This exercise is great for building your mental math skills. 

Shape Search: Look for different shapes and angles around your home. For example, identify right angles in door frames, windows, and pieces of furniture. Find examples of parallelograms, rectangles, and other geometric shapes in everyday objects like tables, books, and boxes.

Wind-Powered Cars: Make a simple wind-powered car using a small toy car and a balloon.
